Victor A. McKusick (1921 - 2008)

It is with great sadness that we learned that Victor died last Tuesday.

Victor will be remembered as a towering international figure in genetics research, diagnosis and treatment and was rightfully honoured as the founding father of medical genetics as a specialty, as well as a strong mentor by generations of students, trainees and faculty, including many of the leading geneticists in Europe.

His many contributions to the field of Human genetics, too numerous to list, have been of immense importance not only for our research but also for the clinical practice.

More than the recipient of scores of national and international prizes, honorary doctorates and accolades, the memory of Victor will be one of a very likable and easily approachable person, always available to listen and help those who requested his attention.

On behalf of the members of the European Society of Human Genetics we would like to extend our deepest condolences to his family and friends.

Professor Jean-Jacques Cassiman
