Virginia Nunes, a pioneer in human genetics in Spain, Head of the Human Molecular Genetics Group at the Bellvitge Biomedical Research Institute (IDIBELL) and Professor at the University of Barcelona, passed away on May 24, 2024. Dr. Nunes was a prominent figure in the field of human genetics, and her career left a deep mark on the scientific community.

With a bachelor's and doctoral degree in biology from the Autonomous University of Barcelona, Virginia Nunes began her scientific career in the late 1970s, when she joined the Hematology service at the Hospital de Sant Pau. After a stay in Paris to train in human genetics, she returned to the Hospital de Sant Pau to work with the human genetics group led by Dr. Baiget and Dr. Estivill. In 1991, she moved to the Oncology Research Institute (IRO), which later became IDIBELL. There she was first head of the Medical and Molecular Genetics Center and later of the Human Molecular Genetics group, as well as coordinator of the Genes, Disease, and Therapy Program.

Her research focused on identifying the genetic bases of various hereditary diseases such as cystic fibrosis and Wolfram syndrome, and she led projects as significant as those that led to the discovery of the genes responsible for cystinuria.

Dr. Nunes was known for her great empathy, always keeping her office doors open to listen and help those in need. Her courage was evident in defending the causes she considered just, speaking honestly and directly, earning her the respect and friendship of many colleagues. Moreover, she was an enormously generous person, helping everyone, both emotionally and materially, whenever she could.

Virginia Nunes was also an unconventional person, prioritizing her ideas and beliefs, displaying a joy and originality that made her unique. Her colleagues and friends will remember her as a great friend, very intelligent, astute, and witty.

Her loss leaves a huge void. Rest in peace, Virginia.
