An opportunity is available in one of the leading roles in Genetic Counselling in Australia. The Genomic Medicine Department and Parkville Familial Cancer Centre (FCC) is looking for a Senior Genetic Counsellor to lead a large and diverse team of more than 20 Genetic Counsellors in a clinical and academic genetics program that spans two internationally recognised health services, the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.

 

Genomic Medicine and Parkville FCC provide a full range of adult genetics services including multidisciplinary programs dedicated to inherited cancer, neurogenetics, cardiac, renal, endocrine genetics, and other fields, it supports mainstream genetic testing across a number of conditions and is the lead site for a range of research programs and clinical trials defining the cutting edge of medical genetics. Genomic Medicine and Parkville FCC enjoy close links with the University of Melbourne, Sir Peter MacCallum Department of Clinical Oncology and the Masters of Genomic Health/Genetic Counselling course and is home to a number of embedded research groups.

 

The Senior GC will work closely with the Clinical Director and Operations Manager to ensure the delivery of a high-quality clinical service, set the direction for the development of the GC team and contribute to the research and educational activities of the department. They will have an opportunity to establish a clinical practice in areas of their special interest and originate new counsellor-led practice and research. The successful candidate may be supported in an honorary appointment to the University of Melbourne consistent with their experience.

Job Requirements

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA Formal Qualifications: • Minimum two years post Part 2 Certification in Genetic Counselling by the Human Genetics Society of Australasia, or International qualification recognised through reciprocal arrangement with HGSA Essential: • Experience in managing a service area of a hospital • Experience in providing leadership and significant contribution to the clinical activities of a health service. • Experience in leading a diverse clinical team • Demonstrated capacity to develop and deliver a strategic vision • Involvement in education and quality assurance activities in the area of Genetics / Familial Cancer • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills • Excellent time management skills with focus on attention to detail. Desirable: • 5 years post Part 2 Certification in Genetic Counselling by the Human Genetics Society of Australasia or an International qualification recognised through reciprocal arrangement with HGSA • Involvement in Genetic Counselling professional activities • Involvement in research activities • Previous experience in the supervision of Genetic Counsellors • Previous experience in the education and training of Genetic Counsellors and training of staff in other disciplines. • Previous experience in leading change within a clinical service. • Formal training in leadership and management.
