In all cases, you must not be a Principal Investigator (PI).

Rules that apply to all conference fellowships

  • You must be an Early Career Investigator (see above) and must not be a Principal Investigator.
  • You must be an ESHG member for 2027. If your membership is not yet valid for 2027, you will need to renew it before you can take up the fellowship.
  • You can receive only one conference fellowship per year, whichever type it is.
  • You cannot receive a conference fellowship in two consecutive years.
  • A conference fellowship cannot be combined with an ESHG Mentorship (awarded by the ESHG Education Committee).

How to apply for fellowships 1, 2 and 3

Fellowships 1, 2 and 3 are awarded by the Scientific Programme Committee for scientific excellence. To be considered:

  1. Submit an abstract for the ESHG 2027 Conference through the ESHG online abstract submission system. Only presenters of accepted abstracts can receive one of these fellowships.
  2. During submission, at the step “Fellowships & Awards”, tick the boxes for the fellowships you would like to be considered for.
  3. Submit by February 4, 2027, 23:59 CET.

There is no separate application form — your abstract submission is your application.

1. Conference Fellowships for European Countries

Up to 140 fellowships, awarded for scientific excellence to Early Career Investigators from European countries. There are no restrictions on which European country you come from.

You receive free conference registration (including lunches) and EUR 400 towards your travel expenses.

2. Conference Fellowships for Non-European Countries

40 fellowships, awarded for scientific excellence to Early Career Investigators from countries classified as low- and middle-low-income economies. Ten fellowships are available for each of four regions: Central and South America, Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.

You receive free conference registration (including lunches) and EUR 600 towards your travel expenses.

3. Conference Fellowships of Excellence

10 fellowships, awarded to the Early Career Investigators with the best-rated abstracts in the peer-review process. There are no country restrictions.

You receive free conference registration (including lunches) and EUR 600 towards your travel expenses.

4. National ESHG Fellowships

For these fellowships, the selection is made by the National Human Genetics Societies of Europe. Each national society nominates one Early Career Investigator, and the ESHG then formally confirms and awards the fellowship.

An abstract is not formally required for this fellowship, but strongly encouraged.

The nominee must:

  • be a current member of their national society;
  • meet the general rules above (Early Career Investigator, not a Principal Investigator, ESHG membership valid for 2027, no conference fellowship in the previous year);
  • have shown excellence in the field of human genetics — for example through an outstanding presentation or poster at the most recent national meeting.

Only one person per country can be nominated.

You receive free registration for the ESHG Conference (including lunches) and EUR 600 towards your travel expenses.

How to apply: please contact your national society directly. Each national society decides how nominations are made and sets its own closing date.

IMPORTANT NOTE: The organising office reserves the right to revoke the offer of conference fellowships at any time, in particular if the conference requires a change of format, for example due to a pandemic. Fellowship applicants cannot derive any claims from this offer.
