The prize is awarded to an outstanding young researcher in the field of human genetics, and honours the memory of Dr Leena Peltonen, a former ESHG president and world-renowned human geneticist who died in 2010 and who contributed greatly to the identification of disease genes for human diseases. It was established in 2010 to recognize scientists who are in the early phases of their independent careers. The prize is awarded every second year and is funded by the Leena Peltonen Memorial Fund in the Paulo Foundation and supported by the ESHG. It includes an award of EUR 10 000 and the laureate gives the opening lecture of the ESHG Conference in this year.
